Freddy Lim (林昶佐), the charismatic frontman of the Taiwanese metal band CHTHONIC 閃靈, has been appointed as Taiwan’s next representative to Finland. This appointment marks a remarkable transition from music to diplomacy and highlights Lim’s long-standing political career and dedication to human rights and Taiwanese sovereignty.

Commenting on his new role, Lim said: “Alongside my connection to music, my long-standing commitment to human rights, progressive values, and the fight against authoritarianism are ideals deeply shared by both Taiwan and Finland. These are areas in which our future collaboration and exchange can grow even stronger.”

A Life Between Music and Politics

Freddy Lim (林昶佐) is known not only as the singer of CHTHONIC 閃靈 but also as a political activist. From 2010 to 2014, he served as the chair of Amnesty International Taiwan, advocating for international human rights. From 2016 to 2024, he served two terms in Taiwan’s Legislative Yuan, becoming the world’s first heavy metal musician to enter a national parliament.

As a student, Lim originally supported unification with China, having been educated with China-centric textbooks in middle and high school. Over time, however, his political views shifted, and he developed a growing sense of Taiwanese identity. In his second year of university, he founded CHTHONIC 閃靈 in 1995.

His political involvement began with his role at Amnesty International Taiwan between 2010 and 2014. In 2015, he co-founded the New Power Party (NPP), a progressive party that emerged from the Sunflower Movement, which opposed a trade agreement with China. He won a second legislative term in 2020 as an independent. In parliament, Lim advocated for social justice, the legalisation of same-sex marriage, and the abolition of the death penalty.

Freddy Lim (林昶佐) is a passionate advocate for Taiwan’s right to self-determination and is a vocal critic of the Chinese government’s repressive actions against minorities and pro-democracy movements. He is careful to clarify, however, that his criticism is directed at the Chinese government, not the Chinese people. Lim actively supports pro-democracy movements in Hong Kong and Tibet and believes Taiwan has a responsibility to serve as a democratic role model in Asia.

His political career and his music are closely tied to his support for Taiwanese sovereignty – an issue that often puts him at odds with the Chinese government.

Connection to Finland

CHTHONIC 閃靈 has long had a connection to Finland, being signed to Finnish label Spinefarm/Universal and releasing several internationally distributed albums, including Mirror of Retribution (2009), Takasago Army (2011), and Bù-Tik (2013). This connection is further strengthened by Lim’s appointment as representative.

Recently, CHTHONIC 閃靈 released a new single, Endless Aeons, and a new live EP, Megaportal 2425, and announced that a new album is in the works. These musical projects show that Lim remains musically active despite his new diplomatic responsibilities.

Political Tensions and International Relations

Taiwan’s political landscape is currently marked by tension. President Lai Ching-te (賴清德) has emphasised that Taiwan is open to communication and cooperation with China, provided it is conducted on equal footing and with mutual respect. At the same time, he has stressed the importance of preparing for potential conflict in order to maintain peace.

Freddy Lim’s (林昶佐) appointment as Taiwan’s representative to Finland is a significant step that showcases his diverse talents and deep commitment to Taiwan. Lim will play an important role not only as a musician but also as a political activist and diplomat. His political stance, particularly regarding China, will remain of great importance as he steps into this new role.

The German-Taiwanese Association and its youth branch, the Young Taiwan Initiative, extend their congratulations to Freddy Lim (林昶佐) on his appointment as Taiwan’s new representative to Finland.
